"Shiki tō Unkai II" is the second work of the compositional series "Shiki tō Unkai". This work was premiered at Ryogoku Monten Hall (Tokyo, Japan) in "Chatori Shimizu Solo Composition Concert" by Naoyuki Manabe (shō) and Akira Sato (Vc.) on June 22, 2014.
This work for Shō and Cello was composed with the concept "A variety of sustainability seen from the summit of Mt. Fuji". The view of the sea of clouds, seen from the summit of Mt. Fuji (3,776m), varies greatly with the seasons. I have designed the sounds with the inspiration of Spring Season -- where the sea of clouds is patched up with altocumulus clouds. These clouds form from the height of 2,000m above sea level, are very individualistic, and forms a crack of view in the sea of clouds, uncovering the dark-green, reddish-brown earth. The sudden rise/dive in the short melody, the turbid harmony created from sustained pitch, and individualistic sounds not affiliated with any other sound groups in this work all depict forms of clouds I have seen from the Summit of Mt. Fuji.
The music is separated into 19 parts, each depicting different characters of the concept. Each of the sections has a set time for its performance, which are specified on the score. The Shō, when used in the traditional Gagaku ensemble, is tuned to a pitch of a=430Hz, but when collaborating with a Western instrument, such as the Cello, it is tuned to a=442Hz -- a tune which is applicable in Western music. I am excited to have an opportunity to be able to introduce the tantalizing but beautiful ambience of the collaboration of Shō and Cello.
