Program Note
Worlds of No Overlap was commissioned by pianist Yusuke Satoh in 2014, and was premiered at the "Yusuke Satoh Debut 10th Anniversary Concert" on June 14th, 2014, held in Suginami Kokaido Hall, Tokyo. Music is an art of time. As a sound is born, with the passage of time, it reverberates through space and concludes in silence. The acoustic reverberation of music concerns the delicate matter of criticality. A minute difference in the architecture of the hall, the moisture level of the room, or the number of audience in a space can swing the mood of acoustics. As a composer, it is imperative to create that freedom for the pianist to color her/his music as they see fit; and in their end of the bargain, the pianist must utilize her/his instinct to tease out the appropriate acoustics in music. World of No Overlap provides the pianist with elastic rules in the realm of tempo and pedaling, and allows her/him to mold the perfect acoustical features of this music in any space.
