As I enter the room, a bird stands before me. The bird has a name. The bird speaks its mind. The bird has friends and family who love the bird, and whom the bird loves. The bird wears clothes the bird has chosen, and accessories the bird has made. The bird is able to talk for long hours of its childhood memories and early adulthood. Some are sweet, some sour, and some bittersweet.

I breath a sigh of relief that I cannot understand the bird's language, and that my conscious ignorance and apathy shrouds these stories in a mystery.

  As a child, I was afraid of eating meat. I could consume processed meat - a ham or a chicken nugget - where the animal’s form and texture were obscured, but not those with any of part or whole shape of the animal was visible. While the reasons for this are complex and multifaceted, one major reason I see looking back is that I grew up watching animations and reading books with relatable animal characters, of which I still feel attached to. Later, I have learned that the act of ascribing human personality, conduct, cognition, or other attributes to non-human entities is called hyper-anthropomorphism.

  As a follow up, I do eat meat now. Growing up in a culture that emphasizes gratitude for all food, I worked hard to be able to eat meat; first in small, unrecognizable pieces, then in larger cuts, eventually even finding some enjoyment in the taste. ​​
