Program Note

We humans may be unknowingly acting as hosts to self-replicating units of ideas and beliefs that use our brains and minds as vehicles for their own reproduction. They enter and evolve in us, not in the aim to benefit us, but to maximize their own spread. To what extent is our “self” just a collection of particularly successful memes that have colonized our minds?

Compositional Background

Ohayo Parasite was commissioned by TRIO “Alele” (euphonium, bass clarinet, and drum kit) and was composed in Boscawen, Kamikawa, and Taipei, between February and late May of 2024. Designed to "enhance" the capabilities of both the instruments and the performers, the composition incorporates the use of tubes of varying lengths attached to the valves and mouthpiece of the instrument, connecting them with the instrumentalists and objects such as a tank filled with water.

Although the work is not a site-specific piece, it is recommended that the performance be staged in an environment that reflects themes of destruction, pollution, or environmental degradation (the interpretation of which may be left to the performer’s discretion). During the live performance, the audience will be provided with virtual reality goggles, which will immerse them in a visual representation of the performers on a boat in the tranquil and picturesque Seto Inland Sea.

"Ohayo" is a polite, cheerful, routine greeting in Japanese, meaning "good morning". This work is an homage to the Memetics Theory by Richard Dawkins.
