Program Note

I’ve been writing a diary every night since I was 13. While I admit that I miss a few nights each year, I am proud that this has been a consistent part of my life, and I plan to keep writing in the foreseeable future. Although I rarely revisit my past writings for various reasons, when I do, I am often amazed and shocked by the things that have happened  -  at times completely different from how I remember them.

Our understanding of the past changes as we grow older. There are many reasons for this, but one is that we naturally try to create a narrative to make sense of our experiences. The contours of reality are often blurred, yet when we move through our memories, we can freely shape those contours and even create a sort of "scapegoat" for the difficulties we faced. It’s fascinating to look through the pages I wrote more than 20 years ago and compare them side by side with the memories I carry in my mind.

Rinkaku is a Japanese word meaning "contour".
